Smiley emojis are the most used emoji category by far — and the most misread. The same face can be friendly from one person and passive-aggressive from another. This guide covers what the face emojis actually mean in texting today, not just their official names.
This is the biggest change in how smiley emojis are used. For a decade, 😂 was the internet's laugh — it was even Oxford's Word of the Year in 2015. Then around 2020, younger users on TikTok started treating 😂 as a boomer emoji and replaced it with 💀 ("I'm dead") and 😭 (laughing until crying).
Today the rule of thumb: 😂 reads normal to anyone over 30, and dated to anyone under 25. 💀 and 😭 are the current default laughs. 🤣 sits in between. None of them is wrong — but if you're wondering why a younger person replies 💀 to your joke, that's a compliment, not a threat.
