What Is Kundli Matching (Guna Milan)?
Guna Milan (also called Ashtakoot Milan or Kundli Milan) is a traditional Vedic astrology method, originating in India thousands of years ago, that's used to check how compatible two people are for marriage. Today it's used by couples and families well beyond India too — across the South Asian diaspora and by anyone curious about Vedic astrology worldwide. It compares each person's birth Nakshatra (lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon was passing through at birth) and Rashi (Moon sign) across eight categories called "kootas," each worth a set number of points, adding up to a maximum of 36 Gunas. A higher score is traditionally considered more favorable for a long, stable relationship.
How Is This Different From Western Zodiac Compatibility?
Western astrology (the Aries–Taurus–Gemini system most people worldwide are familiar with) is based on the Sun's position and uses a fixed calendar-based zodiac. Vedic astrology instead tracks the Moon's exact position against a sidereal (star-fixed) backdrop, giving a more precise, individual "Rashi" (Moon sign) and a much more specific "Nakshatra" (1 of 27 lunar mansions) — which is why two people born on the same date can have different Nakshatras depending on their birth time. Both systems are used for compatibility, but Guna Milan's 8-category scoring (Ashtakoot) is unique to the Vedic tradition.
The 8 Kootas, Explained
Varna (1 point) — Spiritual compatibility
Based on the spiritual/temperament group of each Rashi (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra).
Vashya (2 points) — Mutual control
Checks which partner naturally has more influence in the relationship, based on Rashi groupings.
Tara (3 points) — Birth star compatibility
Counts the distance between the two Nakshatras to check general health and well-being compatibility.
Each Nakshatra is linked to an animal symbol; matching or friendly animal pairs score higher.
Graha Maitri (5 points) — Mental compatibility
Based on the planetary rulers of each Moon sign and their classical friendship/enmity.
Gana (6 points) — Temperament
Each Nakshatra falls into Deva (divine), Manushya (human), or Rakshasa (fierce) temperament groups.
Bhakoot (7 points) — Love & general well-being
Based on the distance between the two Moon signs (Rashis); certain distances are considered inauspicious ("dosha").
Nadi (8 points) — Health & progeny
The single most heavily weighted koota — same Nadi type is traditionally considered a significant dosha.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this calculator based on real astrology?
Yes — it calculates each person's actual Moon Nakshatra and Rashi using real astronomical formulas (sidereal lunar longitude with Lahiri ayanamsa), then applies the standard Ashtakoot (36-Guna) scoring rules used in traditional Vedic matchmaking. It is simplified for free online use, not a substitute for a professional consultation.
Why does it ask for time of birth?
The Moon moves roughly 13° per day, which is almost exactly one Nakshatra. Without an exact birth time, the Nakshatra calculated is an approximation based on midday. For the most accurate result, enter the real birth time.
What is considered a "good" Guna Milan score?
Traditionally: below 18 is not recommended, 18–24 is average/acceptable, 25–32 is good, and 33–36 is considered excellent. A low score on Nadi or Bhakoot specifically is traditionally viewed as more significant than the total number alone.
Should I make a marriage or relationship decision based only on this score?
No. This tool is for informational and entertainment purposes, wherever in the world you're using it from. A real Guna Milan consultation also considers birth place, exact chart (Kundli), and the astrologer's judgment of dosha cancellations — please consult a certified astrologer for an official reading.
Do I need to be Indian or Hindu to use this?
Not at all. Guna Milan is rooted in Vedic (Indian) tradition, but anyone, anywhere, can use this calculator out of curiosity about Vedic astrology compatibility — just like people worldwide enjoy Western zodiac compatibility tests.
Nakshatra and Rashi positions are computed from the Moon's sidereal ecliptic longitude, using a truncated version of the lunar position formulas published in Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms (2nd ed., Willmann-Bell) — the standard reference formulas widely used in astronomical and astrological software.
Ayanamsa (precession correction) uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) Ayanamsa, the official standard adopted by the Indian government's Calendar Reform Committee and the most widely used ayanamsa in Vedic astrology software.
The eight Ashtakoot koota rules (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi) follow the classical Guna Milan framework described in traditional Vedic astrology texts (incl. principles from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Muhurta Chintamani) as commonly summarized and cross-checked across multiple published Vedic astrology references.
This implementation is a simplified, free, educational/entertainment version of a traditionally much more detailed consultation — it does not account for dosha-cancellation rules, divisional charts, or exact birth-place precision that a professional Vedic astrologer would include.
